Glencairn boss reckons lack of match sharpness cost them in West of Scotland League debut

Rutherglen Glencairn boss Willie Harvey reckons a lack of match sharpness cost them victory in their West of Scotland League Premier League debut on Saturday.

Last week’s fixture with Largs Thistle was called off due to high winds and Harvey believes that worked against them as Hurlford came from behind to win 2-1 at Blair Park.

Liam Gormely had opened the scoring in the first half, but the game was turned on its head in the second half. Glens were denied a penalty and then Hurlford went up the pitch to equalise through Michael Wardrope before Lewis Morrison netted a spot-kick winner in the 76th minute.

And Harvey said: “The lack of football we’ve played in the last couple of weeks showed and the fact Hurlford have played every week.

“Our team was fit enough, but they lacked the sharpness on Saturday and that allowed Hurlford to push us back.

“We had a good first half, looked really composed, hard to break down.

“Second half we had a really good opportunity to make it 2-0 in the first couple of minutes, but the keeper pulled off a tremendous save. After that we should have had a penalty. I’m not making excuses for the result, but it should have been a penalty.”

Having that chance denied was hard to take, but Harvey is feeling positive ahead of a home clash with Bonnyton Thistle on Saturday. He added: “ I’m not taking anything away from my team, considering how long we’d been out.

“There’s no doom and gloom or massive inquiries into what we did. There’s a lot of positives to take.”
