Glenboig food project receives funding boost

An environmental project in Glenboig has received funding from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT).

The village’s Development Trust earned a grant of £5102 for its food growing and high street project, which will also see the group work with local schools to help pupils grow fresh fruit and vegetables.

Glenboig’s green-fingered residents were among 22 groups in mining communities across Scotland to receive support for growing projects, as part of a wider initiative to address food poverty.

CRT, which is funded by the Scottish Government, aims to support projects initiatives to improve health and employment prospects for residents of coalfield areas.

With its normal range of community activities not taking place due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organisation instead allocated funding to areas which had previously participated in its community futures programme after groups highlighted their produce-growing projects as “a priority helping people facing food insecurity”.

Its chair, Nicky Wilson, said: “Social and economic issues in mining areas have been exacerbated by Covid-19.

“We have seen more people struggle to be able to afford to feed themselves and provide their families with healthy meals, and we hope the funding we’re awarding to groups in coalfields communities across the country will help tackle the serious issue of food poverty.”
