Glenavy parents plead for school road gritting

Parents have taken it upon themselves to grit a "treacherous" school road to protect their kids.

Ballymacrickett Primary School and Nursery at Glenavy has fought for decades to get Scroggy Road gritted from the village right up to the school gate - but so far they are only on the roads department's "secondary" gritting list.

The school and nursery have more than 400 students and almost all come by car.

Currently the road is only gritted intermittently.

But principal Daniel Mulholland said it should be a priority.

He added: "It would be significant peace of mind for everyone - staff and parents. It’s knowing that it’s a safe route."

Ballymacrickett parent Gary McCleave, who is also a Lisburn and Castlereagh councillor, helped to grit the road this week.

He said: "I travel every morning myself, my kids attend the local school so it has been very treacherous the last few mornings. It needs resolved urgently, especially in the winter months."

He added: "The grit spreads pretty well but it’s not sustainable, you couldn’t do this every night."

The Department of Infrastructure said it was unable to grit more roads because of budget cuts.

A spokeswoman said Scroggy Road didn't mean the "salted" network criteria.

She said: "It is our aim to include it on our scheduled list for secondary treatment to facilitate access to Ballymacricket PS in periods of prolonged ice or snow."
