Glenavon confirm departure of defender Colin Coates

Glenavon have announced the departure of defender Colin Coates.

The 35-year-old was placed on the transfer list at Mouneview Park during the summer "due to the restructuring of the playing staff post COVID-19".

Glenavon have already bolstered their defensive options during the transfer window, including the signings of former Linfield pair Mark Stafford and Mark Haughey.

Coates - who joined Glenavon in January 2020 - made 24 appearances for the Lurgan Blues and scored four goals.

The veteran defender had one year remaining on his contract at Mourneview but is now looking for a new challenge in the Irish Premiership.

Glenavon manager Gary Hamilton told the club's website : “We’d like to wish Coatesy all the best for the future.”

Speaking to Belfast Live earlier this summer, Coates said he had "plenty more to offer" in the Premiership.

He added: "I feel fit and strong and ready to go. I have that hunger and will to play football. Hopefully I can get something sorted soon so I am ready for pre-season.

"It will be disappointing to leave Glenavon, but it is another opportunity and challenge for me. I love playing and I love that competition and competing, and I have that will to win."

Meanwhile, Glenavon have announced that teenage midfielder Jamie Doran has agreed a two-year deal with the club.

The 17-year-old made three appearances for the Lurgan Blues last season, making his debut against Warrenpoint.

Glenavon boss Hamilton added: “Jamie is someone I rate really highly and I’m delighted he has agreed to extend his stay with us.

“He is a player with great potential and I look forward to seeing his career develop at Mourneview Park.”
