Glen retain Derry SFC crown with impressive win over Slaughtneil

Derry Senior Football Championship final: Glen 1-12 Slaughtneil 0-7

Glen retained the Derry SFC title with an impressive eight-point victory over Slaughtneil in what was a repeat of last year’s decider in Celtic Park.

On that occasion, the Maghera side clinched their maiden senior Championship with a 1-13 to 0-7 victory over the 2020 champions and Sunday’s final was a carbon copy of last year’s decider.

The 2022 rematch was predicted to be a much closer affair, but Malachy O’Rourke’s side gained control of proceedings from the early stages and Slaughtneil failed to land a blow on their rivals.

Indeed, it took Slaughtneil 20 minutes to register their first point via a free from Derry star Shane McGuigan. By that stage, Glen already had six points and were 0-7 to 0-2 ahead at half-time.

Emmet Bradley and Michael Warnock extended Glen’s lead on the restart and Slaughtneil finally got a run of scores with Jerome McGuigan, Christopher Bradley and McGuigan all on target to cut the deficit to four points.

Ethan Doherty got Glen motoring again before Watty Graham’s ended the game as a contest inside the final 10 minutes.

Emmet Bradley’s long delivery wasn’t cleared by the Slaughtneil defence and Cathal Mulholland was on hand to poke the ball home from close range.

Glen were defeated after extra-time in the Ulster Club series last year by eventual All-Ireland winners Kilcoo, but they’re back in the mix in 2022 and await the Tyrone champions, either Errigal Ciaran or Carrickmore, in next month’s quarter-final.

Glen scorers : Cathal Mulholland 1-1, Michael Warnock 0-2, Ethan Doherty 0-2, Jack Doherty 0-2, Conleth McGuckian 0-2, Conor Glass 0-1, Emmet Bradley 0-1, Eunan Mulholland 0-1.

Slaughtneil scorers: Shane McGuigan 0-2 (0-1f), Patsy Bradley 0-1, Jerome McGuigan 0-1, Padraig Cassidy 0-1, Christopher Bradley 0-1 (0-1f), Keelan Feeney 0-1.
