Glen Powell’s ‘Spy Kids’ roots played a shocking part in ‘The Running Man’s press tour

The Running Man is finally here and Glen Powell had a fun Spy Kids reunion during the press tour. He talked to Mike Ryan over at IndieWire about adapting the Stephen King novel. As they were joking about some of his old quotes, Powell actually brought up Robert Rodriguez out of the blue. The Running Man star still has a lot of love for his time in the Spy Kids franchise. It’s important to never forget your roots. And, it feels like Powell took that advice to heart actually!

Powell shared. “I have to say, the thing I’m really enjoying about showing this movie to even like guys like Robert Rodriguez. I talked to him yesterday and Robert loves this movie. He gave me my first gig…”

Well, first of all, that’s adorable. A lot of times, these massive stars look back at their humble beginnings with a kind of bashful acceptance. It can be hard for an actor to acknowledge something they believe is silly now. That’s not the case for Powell. Without that experience on set with Robert Rodriguez, There’s no Top Gun: Maverick, and probably no Running Man to speak of.

“And the full circle nature of that? You talk about jump cuts. That is the ultimate jump cut. It’s the guy who got let on set for the first time in Austin Studios and never wanted to leave,” Powell admitted. “They literally had to make me leave that set after I shot my one scene I just wanted to hang out and ask people questions … and here we are. It’s like, I can’t believe the guy who gave me my first gig is even commenting on a movie I get to be on with another great filmmaker.”

This is just the latest example of Powell having a bit of fun with his Spy Kids past. This week, BBC Radio 1 had the star in studio to rate some unpopular opinions. One caller named Zoe thought that The Running Man star peaked with Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. That’s a bit of a hot take, but we’re not ones to judge. To young Zoe’s credit, she actually got Powell to agree that his work in the Children’s franchise is a little underrated?

Zoe said that when Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over hit theaters, it changed cinema forever and Powell’s deadpan, “I totally agree,” could feed families. He asked the caller what happened in his career after that, and she joked, “not much!” While the host chuckled at the exchange, Powell had to just smile at the gag. But, he actually had something to add.

“Can I tell you something, I’m glad we’re talking about this,” he joked. “I will say, every time I go back to Austin, Texas, the fact that all people want to talk about is Spy Kids. There’s a part of me that’s like, ‘Oh, that’s great!’ But, you’re exactly right. When you peak at 13 years old, you can’t shake that. so, this is an unpopular opinion, I live with this every day. I look in the mirror and all I see is the Spy Kids.”

We adore a man who could have a little bit of fun. Luckily, it seems like Powell It’s all about that these days.
