Turning a fun character or sketch into a whole comedy series isn’t extremely common but if I had a nickel for every time it happened, I’d have two nickels. But it is weird that it happened twice. I am, of course, referring to Ted Lasso and now Chad Powers.
As someone who grew up in a sports loving household, when something from ESPN broke into my world view, that’s when I knew it was big. If I don’t have to watch ESPN, I don’t. But my oldest brother showing me a sketch of Eli Manning pretending to be a football player was enough to pique my interest. That was in 2022 and now, three years later, the series Chad Powers is getting ready to walk on (to Hulu).
The show was co-created by Powell and Michael Waldron and is set to premiere on Hulu at the end of the month and the new trailer for it should have you very excited. Whether you cared about the series or not, the trailer is genuinely hilarious.
The synopsis for the series is as follows: “Eight years after an unforgivable mistake nukes his promising college football career, hotshot quarterback Russ Holliday tries to resurrect his dreams by disguising himself as Chad Powers – a talented oddball who walks on to the struggling South Georgia Catfish.”
Catfish….get it? Because he’s catfishing everyone? But the hijinks of this disguise is really going to make Chad Powers something special. Thinking of him trying to take a shower after practice with all those prosthetics on? Hilarious. No notes.
You can see the trailer here:
The cast of the series includes Glen Powell as Russ Holliday/Chad Powers, Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia Yeager, Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny and Steve Zahn as Coach Jake Hudson.
Chad Powers will premiere on September 30 with a 2 episode premiere and then airs weekly on Tuesdays after. The series will have 6 episodes in total.
