Almost two years after their highly publicised breakup, Glen Powell has officially broken his silence on his 2023 split with Gigi Paris, as well as the “narrative” (*cough* the rumoured affair with Sydney Sweeney *cough*) that might’ve factored into the relationship’s demise.
‘Twas the year 2023 when Hollywood’s rumour mill went into overdrive with whispers of a rumoured on-set romance between Anyone But You co-stars, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell.
The rumours first surfaced while the pair were filming the romcom Down Under, and on top of that spiciness, both Sydney and Glen were in serious relationships during production. At the time, Glen was with his girlfriend of three years, Gigi Paris, and Sydney was engaged to Jonathan Davino.
However, shit truly hit the fan when Gigi shared a cryptic Instagram post with the caption, “Know your worth and on to the next”, which seemingly marked the end of her and Glen’s relationship.
While Gigi has since been vocal about the split — as well as those scathing cheating allegations — the Top Gun: Maverick actor remained tight-lipped on his breakup… until now.
In his GQ cover interview, which dropped on September 9 (local time), Powell reflected on his relationship with Gigi, as well as some of the major claims Gigi made during her incredibly juicy interview on the Too Much Podcast, where she talked about the Anyone But You rumours.
“I will always have nothing but love for her and respect for her,” he told the publication.
“Everybody’s always going to have their own narrative on things and all that. And she’s welcome to it.
“Relationships are really hard. And when two people break up, they each go to their own brunch, and they will each tell their own narrative.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Glen also dropped some wisdom he got from Top Gun: Maverick co-star Tom Cruise, which seemingly stuck with him when the gossip became overbearing.
“He basically said, ‘Hey, it’s going to get really, really loud. It’s your job to just turn the volume down. Just remember you have your hand on that switch. You have your hand on the ability to turn up that noise or turn it down.’ And really just turning down the noise and trusting your own gut has been a real godsend for me,” Powell shared.
What did Gigi Paris say about her breakup with Glen Powell?
Months prior to Glen’s GQ cover interview, Gigi unpacked their split on the Too Much Podcast. While she doesn’t mention the actor by name, it’s extremely clear who she was talking about.
In the episode, Gigi claimed that their relationship first started to decline when people began tagging her in an IG post he made referencing Sydney.
“I just screenshotted it to him and said ‘Hey, the world is watching, watch what you’re saying’. Like, please proceed with caution. And that wasn’t received very well,” Gigi claimed.
“What’s funny about all of that is that you don’t want to seem like the crazy person. You don’t want to seem insecure. You don’t want to seem jealous. And those words, I promise, only stem from when there’s a reason,” she continued.
“I can be the most confident person in the room, but as soon as the person closest to me makes me feel like I have to prove myself in some sort of way, of course, I’m going to start questioning.”
She then admitted from that point onward, the on-set romance rumours between Glen and Sydney got way too intense.
“I hit a threshold of what I could take, and that was that,” Gigi added.
“I had two options. I could either pretend like I was going along with everything and have everyone wonder, like, ‘Are they hooking up? Are they not hooking up? Is she okay with this? What the fuck?’ Or stand up for myself and say, ‘No, I’m actually not okay with this, and I’m walking away.’ So that’s what I decided to do … I was shattered.”
This then led to her flying to Australia to breakup with the actor. However, Gigi claimed that there was a rule that she “wasn’t allowed anywhere near” the Anyone But You set, and that Glen told her via a phone call “the producers and I have discussed and I think it’s best that you don’t come to visit”.
At the time of writing, Gigi hasn’t responded to Glen’s GQ spiel. But I reckon, as she’s said, she’s already on to the next, and we love this for her!
