Glen Johnson gives his honest opinion on Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara

Liverpool will benefit massively from Thiago who can take the responsibility off their front three, according to Glen Johnson.

The Spaniard had long been linked with a switch to Anfield after expressing his desire to quit Bayern Munich.

Prior to his arrival the Reds relied heavily on their attacking trio to get the goals that would win them games.

But they would occasionally struggle against teams who sat deep, although Thiago's creativity will help counter that.

He has by no means been a prolific midfielder during his trophy-laden career, but Johnson is confident he will play a huge role in the attacking third.

Asked if he thinks Thiago suits the Reds' style of play, Johnson told compare.bet : “I do. Last season their three front men were carrying the side in terms of goals.

"But you can’t rely on that consistently all throughout the year.

“For a player like Thiago, or even someone in the past like Coutinho, a player who can score and create from midfield gives another threat for the other team to neutralise.

“I certainly think they need to get more goals from midfield, and whether Thiago actually scores them or not, I certainly think he’ll play a role in a lot of goals.”

Thiago has only made two appearances for the Premier League champions following his debut at Chelsea.

He was diagnosed with coronavirus and was then injured in the Merseyside derby following his return.

But the midfielder is now expected back for Liverpool's next game against Leicester.
