Gleann Badraig: New photography book offers a glimpse of life on remote Scottish island

A new photography book offers readers the chance to get a rare glimpse of a remote Scottish island.

Gleann Badraig by photographer Charles March explores the coastal region of Glenbatrick on the island of Jura. Works from the book will also go on show at the Tristan Hoare Gallery later this month.

Charles March became the 11th Duke of Richmond last year, but has also spent decades building an award-winning career as a multidisciplinary photographer.

His artistic endeavours have seen him assist director Stanley Kubrick on his 1975 film Barry Lyndon, work as a reportage photographer in Africa and produce still life photography for prominent advertising campaigns in the 1980s.

The images in the new book take an abstract approach to documenting the landscape of the Inner Hebrides island, with March moving the camera during exposure in order to use it "as a brush”.

March explained he has “used the camera to create an abstract and simplified image, so it’s all about the ‘feeling’ of the place rather than the landscape itself".

March is also known for being the driving force behind turning his family’s 12,000 acre Goodwood estate into a renowned venue for car and horse racing events.

Gleann Badraig is published by Distanz. Selected works will go on view at Tristan Hoare Gallery from November 21-22. For more information, visit tristanhoaregallery.co.uk
