Glazers' refusal to invest in Man Utd hindering Erik ten Hag with no FFP leeway

It's not just the unresolved takeover saga that is affecting Manchester United's business in the transfer market this summer.

Erik ten Hag has been determined to overhaul his squad, and seemingly took the first big step on Wednesday when Mason Mount officially signed for £60million. The club are also set to make a second big money bid for Inter Milan keeper Andre Onana, with David de Gea's contract having expired.

But links to a £100 million move for Spurs striker Harry Kane have not come to a fruition. And whether Ten Hag will have the funds for any more key signings remains to be seen, as Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe await news on whether either of their bids to takeover at Old Trafford will be accepted.

The much-maligned Glazer family are dragging their heals over a decision, a full 225 days after they first publicly announced their intention to sell the club. And United fans made their feelings about the American family known in a protest outside the club shop this month, forcing staff members to temporarily close the doors.

And a report in the Daily Mail could now further exacerbate the disdain. As has been the case in recent years, investment from the Glazers - or lack of - will see United restricted in their off-season spending due to Financial Fair Play issues.

Under the current rules in the Premier League, clubs are not allowed to lose more then £15 million over a rolling three year period. However, there is a loophole providing owners put in £90 million in the form of shares, allowing losses of up to £105 million.

The report outlines that the Glazer family have not put any equity investment into the club themselves. It means United have to stay within the £15 million loss figure, meaning sales will almost certainly be necessary if Ten Hag is to execute his intended overhaul in full.

United are being hindered by the fact they have made just £133 million in player sale profits since 2013, when David Moyes came in to replace Sir Alex Ferguson. Indeed, letting the likes of Paul Pogba and Juan Mata leave Old Trafford for free after initially signing for £90 million and £47 million respectively, typify the costly long term mistakes.

And despite the apparent sale, brothers Malcolm and Joel Glazer could yet remain in Manchester when, and if, a bid is eventually accepted. Whilst Sheikh Jassim wants 100 percent control at the club, Ratcliffe's offer proposes the brothers remaining as minor shareholders.
