'Glazers Out' - plane protest banner flown over Old Trafford before Man Utd vs Chelsea

Manchester United got their Premier League campaign underway against Chelsea at Old Trafford with the fans' discontent with the Glazer family literally looming overhead.

As the 4:30pm kick-off approached - and with United's co-chairman Avram Glazer in attendance - a plane flew over the stadium trailing a banner which read: "Glazers Out."

There has been growing frustration among United fans with the Glazers' ownership of the club, while chief executive Ed Woodward has also faced the wrath of supporters online.

Two social media campaigns using the hashtags '#GlazersOut' and '#WoodwardOut' have gathered pace this summer, with fans frustrated following a perceived lack of transfer activity despite last season's sixth-placed finish.

Harry Maguire (£80m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£50m) and Daniel James (£20m) arrived to bolster Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's options, but there are concerns elsewhere.

Romelu Lukaku - sold to Inter Milan on transfer deadline day - was not replaced in attack, while the club did not strengthen in midfield despite selling Marouane Fellaini earlier this year before losing Ander Herrera on a free to PSG.
