Glaswegians spend almost £500 a year on takeaways

A new study into the UK's appetite for a takeaway has found that Glaswegians spend on average £485 a year on home deliveries - £34 higher than than the UK average.

The study, undertaken by KPMG, also concluded that people in the city order a takeaway roughly three times per month, spending an average of £13.73 on each takeaway.

Over 2000 people were quizzed about their takeaway habits over the course of September and October, with people across the UK ordering an average of 34 takeaway meals to their house over a 12 month period.

And while Glaswegians spend nearly £500 a year to avoid making the dinner, its still way behind the average spend of Londoners, who splash out £709 a year - ahead of Sheffield (£548) and Newcastle (£491) in second and third place respectively.

In respect of the study, Will Hawkley, KPMG Global Head of Leisure and Hospitality, said: “Our findings are great news for operators as 66% of respondents said they order in as often, or more often, than they did a year ago – clearly ‘Takeaway’ is no longer a dirty word.

"Certain groups in particular are showing their affection for takeaways now more than ever with 39% of 18 to 34 year olds saying they order in more than they did 12 months ago".
