Glaswegians offered chance to investigate their family history for free online

Glaswegians have been invited to investigate their family history online for free amid the current lockdown.

Glasgow Libraries are offering people interested in learning more about their backgrounds the chance to do so during the ongoing closure of the city's libraries.

They are providing partial access to the Glasgow Electoral Registers on genealogy website Ancestry remotely for library users in the city.

The electoral registers that are available date from the years 1857 to 1962 and can be accessed after creating a guest account and providing an email address.

Meanwhile, folk who fancy a trip down memory lane can visit the Virtual Mitchell site which brings Glasgow's past to life and is a great place to start researching local history in Glasgow and surrounding areas.

The site features thousands of photographs featuring Glasgow's buildings and streets as well as people going about their daily lives.

Most of the photographs are from Archives and Special Collections housed in the Mitchell Library, with some images from Glasgow Museums and some lent by private owners.
