Glaswegians have paid out £22m in bus lane fines since they were introduced in 2012

Glaswegians have paid out nearly £22m in bus lane fines in Glasgow since they were introduced in the city back in April of 2012.

The figures were received after Glasgow Live submitted a Freedom Of Information request to Glasgow City Council.

From 2012 to December 2019, 894,505 charge notices were issued to drivers in the city, generating a total of £21,750,293 in income for the Council.

The Council also confirmed that 170,574 appeals were received, with 35,193 appeals cancelled as a result.

Bus lane enforcement uses a digital camera system that records vehicles illegally making use of the city's bus lanes, with a charge notice of £60 issued to drivers in Glasgow.

The fine is reduced to £30 where payment is received within 14 days of the date of issue.

A reader who contacted Glasgow Live to voice their concerns about bus lanes in the city centre said: "It's bad enough trying to negotiate the one way system in Glasgow without bus lanes making it even worse.

"I was caught out on Christmas Eve and had no idea until the ticket arrived in the post.

"I wouldn't mind if the money raised from fining drivers went into improving public transport links for people who work unsociable hours, but they don't".

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “Bus lanes provide clear channels for buses to use and help to improve the reliability of services, which is a key consideration for passengers.

“The bus is still easily the most popular form of public transport in Glasgow but the bus industry is under pressure and facing falling passenger numbers.

“As a council we have to do everything we can to sustain public transport in a city where almost half of our population has no access to a car".
