Glaswegians given sneak peek at New Clyde Bridge 'glow up' amid £13m refurbishment

Glaswegians have been given a sneak peek at how the New Clyde Bridge will look once the £13m refurbishment works are completed.

The landmark railway bridge over the River Clyde on the approach to Glasgow Central Station was built between 1899 and 1905 as part of the Edwardian expansion of Glasgow Central, linking it to the west coast mainline as well as routes across Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, Ayrshire and Inverclyde.

New Clyde Bridge, which is also known as the Caledonian Railway Bridge, is one of the hardest-working structures on the railway according to Network Rail – carrying nearly 1,300 trains each day to and from the country’s busiest station.

The major renovation project sees the A-listed structure undergo extensive refurbishment and repair works with engineers blasting off old paint, inspecting and repairing the steel beneath, before repainting the bridge in its existing colour scheme.

Network Rail Scotland shared a couple of photos of the ongoing renovation works of the 200m-long bridge on Twitter this morning.

They tweeted: "We're unwrapping Glasgow Central's 'New Clyde Bridge' section by section, as renovation work continues... Here's a peek behind that white sheeting".

It was met with responses from the public such as "love the colour" and "that's incredible" alongside another humorous response by way of "great shot, riveting".

The renovation work is being delivered by Taziker Industrial, who completed the 20-year-long £75m restoration of the Tay Bridge on behalf of Network Rail back in autumn of 2017.
