Glastonbury would have been 'inspired' by Black Lives Matter, says Emily Eavis

This year’s Glastonbury festival would have been inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement had it gone ahead, says organiser Emily Eavis.

The event had been due to celebrate its 50th anniversary this weekend, with Sir Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar all headlining the Pyramid Stage. It was axed because of the pandemic.

Eavis, daughter of Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis, told NME: “There are so many issues at the moment and I know that we would have been continuing our campaigning on climate change and expanding our work banning the use of plastic across the site.

“We have also been very inspired by Black Lives Matter and working as a festival in the fight against racism, so that would have been prominent in our plans too.”

The BBC will mark the cancelled festival by airing classic performances, including by Adele, Beyoncé and David Bowie, across the weekend. Head here for our full guide.

It came as Frozen actress Kristen Bell has announced she will no longer voice a non-white character in an animated TV show.

The Good Place star Bell, who is white, had played Molly on Apple TV+ comedy Central Park. Molly, a main character, is mixed race.

She wrote on Instagram: “This is a time to acknowledge our acts of complicity. Here is one of mine. Playing the character of Molly on Central Park shows a lack of awareness of my pervasive privilege.”
