Glastonbury Festival fans fear 2021 event 'cancelled' after organiser's message to staff

Fears are mounting that Glastonbury 2021 might be 'cancelled' after organisers reportedly told their booking team to stand down.

In what might be the biggest sign that the festival will not go ahead next year, Glastonbury Festival bookers are said to have been informed they are not needed ahead of summer 2021.

It comes months after Glastonbury's 50th anniversary festival was postponed until next year as the world reeled from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to The Sun, the news might mean headliners such as Kendrick Lamar, Sir Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift will not be descending on the Pyramid stage next year as hoped.

An insider has since revealed to the publication, that the decision effectively means that next year's festival is set to be 'postponed'.

“The bookers have been told they’re not needed for the summer. It’s effectively postponing the festival for a second year running, which is absolutely gutting,” a source told the publication.

The insider added: “They think the first festival of next year will be Reading, which is in August, and even that’s unlikely.”

The news came shortly after Paul McCartney also expressed doubt about Glastonbury 2021 going ahead.

Speaking to Radio 4, Paul - who was meant to headline next year - suggested that 2021 festival season might end up becoming a 'superspreader' event.

"100,000 people closely packed together with flags and no masks – you know, talk about super-spreader. I’d love it to [happen], but I have a feeling it’s not going to,” he said.

While the bosses are working hard to try and find a way to make the festival happen, Glastonbury's co-organiser Emily Eavis has also expressed doubt about the future of the event.

Speaking to the BBC, Eavis revealed that they were doing 'everything they can' but it was difficult to plan ahead.

"I’m not sure there’s anything we could do that would completely ensure we can welcome 200,000 people to spend six days in some fields in June 2021,” she said.

Glastonbury Festival organisers have been approached for comment by The Mirror.
