Irish rock band Inhaler has said they are “excited” to play at their first ever Glastonbury festival this year.
The festival, which was cancelled for the last two years, will make its return from June 22 until June 27 with Paul McCartney as Saturday night headliner.
It will be McCarthy’s second time on the Pyramid stage, having performed in 2004. Pulitzer prize-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar, who will make his debut at the festival to close the Pyramid Stage on Sunday night.
Inhaler – whose frontman Elijah Hewson is the son of Bono – have also been announced as part of the Glastonbury festival line-up.
The band said on Instagram: “Glastonbury! We’re very excited to be making our first ever appearance @glastofest this June."
Also flying the Irish flag are Fontaines D.C.- who have just been voted the Best Band in the World at the NME awards - , Bicep, Róisín Murphy and Joy Crookes.
It had already been announced that Billie Eilish will make her second appearance at Worthy Farm in Somerset on the Pyramid stage, along with Diana Ross, who will be following in the footsteps of fellow veteran superstars including Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie and James Brown in the Sunday “teatime legend” slot.
McCartney and Lamar were among the headline acts for the cancelled festival in 2020, which would have been its 50th anniversary year. Taylor Swift was also due to headline in 2020, but thus far does not appear to be performing this year.
This year’s Glastonbury will act as a belated birthday celebration for McCartney, who turns 80 on June 18th, making him the oldest ever headliner at the festival.
Friday night headliner Eilish will be the festival’s youngest ever solo headliner.
Festival organiser Emily Eavis said: “It really is so exciting to be back. And it feels like we all need it. Everywhere I go, people tell me how much they’re looking forward to the festival’s return and how they’ve all been waiting for it. This will be our first Glastonbury for three years. It’s the biggest buildup we’ve ever had!”
The 2022 line-up has been met with mixed reviews on social media.
Several Twitter users took to the micro-blogging site to tell that they were not impressed with the line-up being filled with pop singers.
One annoyed person fumed: "Welcome Glastonbury pop festival."
A second joined in: "Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish… It’s just wrong."
Another moody social media user added: " Not a huge amount to get excited about here. Pet Shop Boys and Primal Scream aside,"
Others told the unhappy ticket holders to stop moaning as they backed up the festival.
"For people complaining there are over 50 stages at Glastonbury, if you can't find something you like on one of those maybe it's just not the place for you?" a supporter wrote
Another hit back: "So much of that line up is definitely not pop."
