Glastonbury Festival 2020 organisers issue statement in light of coronavirus fears

Organisers of Glastonbury Festival have confirmed they are 'closely monitoring' the coronavirus outbreak amid speculation the Government may have to cancel large-scale gathering, sporting events and festivals.

Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty warned 'reducing mass gatherings' may well turn out to be appropriate to halt the spread of the virus.

And, along with sporting events and other festivals, that could well mean Glastonbury Festival is facing an uncertain future for 2020, with 200,000 people already preparing to descend on Worthy Farm in Pilton in late June.

Adrian Coombs, Glastonbury's head of event operations for the special 50th anniversary festival this year, said plans and preparations for the annual shindig are still in full swing, Somerset Live reports.

But in a statement, he said they were monitoring the developing COVID-19 outbreak.

“Glastonbury Festival thoroughly plans each year's event, and puts in place all necessary measures to protect the public and maximise safety," he said.

"We work closely with all of the relevant agencies, including Public Health England and the NHS, and always review our plans as any circumstances change.

"With this in mind and with our 2020 Festival still 16 weeks away, we continue to plan and prepare for the event, whilst at the same time closely monitoring developments with the coronavirus situation.”

More than 200,000 people are expected to travel to Pilton in Somerset for the five-day event, which takes place from Wednesday, June 24 to Sunday, June 28, 2020.

Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney have already been announced as headliners.
