Glastonbury 2019: The Co-op clears up if new festival shop will sell booze

There's going to be plenty of new things to explore on Worthy Farm when Glastonbury returns at the end of June - but alcohol at the pop-up Co-op store will not be one of them.

Popular after-dark area Block9 will be triple the size it has been in recent years, Arcadia's spider is being replaced with a decommissioned crane from Avonmouth Docks and a massive Victorian pier will be making its debut.

On top of that, there's a handful of brand new stages including one which revellers will enter via Elvis' mouth and a new immersive art installation in the Greenpeace Field.

Festival-goers will also have more choice when it comes to stocking up on supplies during the event, as a mini Co-op store is making its debut this year.

The news was announced back in March, when the company's marketing director Amanda Jennings said: “As the first national food retailer to work in this way with Glastonbury, we are developing exciting and unique plans together for the festival store."

She added there are also plans to open a Co-op store in the village of Pilton itself after the dust has settled on the festival.

Since the announcement, people have been trying to find out whether or not the shop will be selling booze, which would mean they would not have to carry as much through the gates with them.

And after plenty of speculation, we now have a definitive answer.

A Co-op spokesperson said: “Whilst festival goers will not be able to buy alcohol from Co-op at Glastonbury this year, we will have a wide range of soft drinks including mixers, ice and lots of delicious food available to make their weekend just that little bit easier."

So there we have it, while the addition of an on-site Co-op will no doubt be handy for those little things you forgot to pack and things you physically cannot pack - such as ice for those warm gin and tonics - the shop will not be stocking any booze.
