Glastonbury 2019: Police make arrests as festival campers are targeted by tent thieves

This year's Glastonbury Festival has gotten off to an amazing start and everyone is having a lot of fun.

But there is one issue which is concerning some happy campers.

Stories are circulating the festival site about people who have had their tents broken into.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary has recorded 37 crimes so far during the festival, the majority of which were thefts.

The force said this is 51 per cent fewer than at the same stage of the festival in 2017 when we had 76 crimes.

Police have made 12 arrests, one for indecency, nine for possession with intent to supply, one theft and one assault / criminal damage.

One festival-goer told Bristol Live: "Wallets and purses were taken from a big tent near us (in Dairy Ground) last night.

"And then my friend was just going to sleep 3/3.30am when their tent zip went down and two guys were there, one with a torch.

"He was like 'what are you doing? Get out' and they just said 'wrong tent'."

Glastonbury 2019: Guide to all the main stages and areas

Inspector Dan Forster said: "So far, it's been another fantastic Glastonbury Festival.

"We've had fewer crimes reported to us at this stage than in 2017 and everyone seems to be enjoying the amazing sense of community which is unique to Worthy Farm.

"An extremely small number of people have unfortunately had items taken from their tents and we'd encourage those lucky enough to be on site to find an officer and get hold of one of our Police at Glasto phone pouches or leave their valuables at one of the free property lock-ups.

"We'd also advise people to download an anti-theft app – we've already been able to reunite a few phones with their owners using such apps which we wouldn't be able to do otherwise.

Advice from Glastonbury

On the Glastonbury 'Crime reduction and personal safety' section of the website - the following advice is given by the festival:

  • Take any valuables – including prescription medication – with you when you leave your tent: keep them with you or store them in the security lock-ups.
  • To make life harder for thieves, leave your tent untidy so there’s not an obvious bag to grab quickly.
  • Be inventive about where you hide your valuables when sleeping: you may not hear someone enter your tent, so separate your money and valuables into small amounts and hide them in different places in your tent.
  • Don’t challenge people looking through tents – report them to festival staff or the police. Campsite stewards are there for reporting suspicious behaviour, and offenders WILL be expelled from site.
