Glassford Gala Committee urgently looking for volunteers at last gasp meeting

One of the area’s oldest festivals, Glassford Gala is under threat –with an emergency meeting called for volunteers to help save the annual event.

Initially, it was announced that this year’s event was to be cancelled entirely, but a last-gasp meeting is being held in Steayban in Glassford on Thursday 6th February at 6.30pm for 7pm to discuss this year’s Gala and, if enough volunteers come forward, help to save the event.

A post on the Gala’s Facebook page earlier this week said: “After long discussions the Gala Committee have came to the decision that this year’s gala will be cancelled.

"The reason for this is first of all we need more committee members and more help - it just can’t be done anymore with only four people."

A later post said: “It’s not just for help on the day, but from now to the end of Gala Night, so please come along if you can help, hope to see everyone there.”

Glassford Gala is one of the area’s oldest festivals, with a history dating back to 1939 when Margaret Laurie was crowned the first Gala Queen.

Strathaven Gala committee also recently issued a plea for more helpers to ensure that this year’s event could go ahead. A spokesman for the Strathaven Gala committee said: “Really sorry to hear this news from Glassford Gala - hopefully they'll return stronger next year – but it's an important reminder that ALL local events need your support - they don't just happen.”
