Glasses can now be delivered to you on a bike - just like how Deliveroo works

An independent spectacle maker is taking the 'Deliveroo' approach to customers needing frames urgently during the lockdown - by delivering on a bike.

Following reports that 12,000 people are on a 10-week waiting list at Boots, the founder of Cubitts has doubled down to ensure those most in need can get their eyewear quickly, in under 48 hours in some cases.

The London-based business, which is set to begin the phased reopening of its stores on June 29th, opened a hotline for optometry appointments as clinics across the country continue to be closed under lockdown.

Cubitts has also taken inspiration from Deliveroo, by hand-delivering orders by bicycle across the capital.

Tom Broughton, Founder of Cubitts, said: "When I first started Cubitts, I would cycle all over London delivering orders by hand. Being in lockdown has taken us back to our roots in many respects, and part of adapting to these times has been returning to this personal, flexible approach.

"We're getting frames into our customers' hands so quickly, sometimes within 24 hours of them placing their order, and this environmentally-friendly addition to our business is one we intend to keep in place long-term.

"Why wait 12 weeks for a pair of mass-produced frames, when you could have a pair of handmade spectacles you'll cherish for years to come dropped at your door within a few days?"

The brand has a cult celebrity clientele, including Cynthia Erivo, Madonna, Eddie Redmayne, Joe Wicks, Romesh Ranganathan, Claire Foy, and Thom Yorke.
