'Glass smashing' wakes up neighbour who sees row of cars on fire

Three vehicles including a stolen car were destroyed in an arson attack just yards from a row of houses.

The stolen car was set alight after being taken from a nearby road, with vehicles parked either side also suffering major fire damage as the flames spread.

Pictures taken of the aftermath showed the devastating impact of the fire, with windows smashed and bodywork and interiors all burnt out.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at Blakehall, Skelmersdale, at around 5.20 this morning as flames billowed high from the vehicles.

Shell Barnes, who has lived on Blakehall for eight years, said she was awake when the fire broke out and was alerted by the sounds of the cars being damaged.

She said: "I was up and I heard a noise that was like windows being put through.

"I thought it was car windows getting smashed in but I looked out and saw the fire. I saw the flames and called the fire brigade, you've got to really."

Shell said the street is usually quiet and not known for incidents like this.

She added: "There's baby rabbits in the house next to the fire. They could have been killed."

Lancashire Constabulary has confirmed that a Peugeot 307 involved in the fire had been stolen from a home on Belfield.

A spokesperson said: “We were called at 5.41 this morning.

“[Officers have] gone round to look and speak to the owners who said it was parked outside when they went to sleep.

“No arrests have been made.”

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Skelmersdale crews attended a fire on Blakehall in Skelmersdale involving multiple vehicles.

"Three cars were involved in the fire and firefighters used two breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish. The cause of the fire is under investigation and firefighters were in attendance around one hour.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lancashire Constabulary on 101 quoting ref: 0168 on April 28.
