Glass smashes as firefighters battle abandoned building blaze

Glass smashed onto the ground below as firefighters battled an abandoned building blaze in Liverpool City Centre.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service received a 999 call at 3.08pm on Monday, January 16, following reports of a blaze at an abandoned building on Phillips Street, just off Leeds Street. Two fire engines arrived at the scene eight minutes later, where firefighters found a blaze on the first floor of the derelict building.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and used hoses to put out the blaze. As firefighters used the high pressure hoses, some already broken glass windows started falling from the first floor onto the ground.

After battling the fire for around 40 minutes the blaze was extinguished and the two firefighters left the building. Firefighters left the scene a short time later.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire Crews have been called to a derelict building on Leeds Street. Liverpool, L3, after reports of a fire at the location. Firefighters arrived to find a fire on the first floor.

"Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and have now extinguished the fire using a high pressure hose reel. Firefighters are now damping down the area and checking for any signs of fire spread."
