March 19--A glass slide perched 1,000 feet above downtown Los Angeles got one step closer to reality Saturday, as the building owner announced it had been airlifted by helicopter onto the 69th floor of the U.S. Bank Tower.
Slated to open in June, the enclosed outdoor slide will allow thrill seekers to scoot 45 feet from the 70th to the 69th floor of the towering building, surrounded by clear glass an inch-and-a-quarter thick.
Singapore-based OUE Ltd., which bought the building three years ago, is promoting the "Skyslide" as a "first-of-its-kind" attraction.
"Guests of all ages will have the opportunity to transform their view of Los Angeles as they glide down, gazing at unparalleled views of the city," OUE President and CEO Lucy Rumantir said in a statement released Saturday.
The 72-story tower is undergoing a $50-million makeover that includes the slide, a new observation deck and a bar on some of its top floors, which are expected to have views stretching from the San Fernando Valley to Santa Catalina Island.
The company is already selling tickets to the new attraction: Admission to the new Skyspace complex will cost $25 and slide tickets will cost $8.
A flurry of posts on social media from witnesses confirmed the operation Saturday morning.
