Glass everywhere as ute smashes through bank doors in heart of Perth's CBD

This utility crashed into a Westpac bank on St Georges Terrace in the Perth CBD on Christmas Day. December 25, 2020.

A ute which smashed spectacularly through the glass doors of a bank in Perth's CBD on Christmas Day has been removed from the scene as police investigate whether it was a deliberate act.

Police said the silver utility went through the front glass doors of the Westpac Bank on St Georges Terrace, at the William Street intersection, at about 4:20pm on Friday.

The vehicle did not stop until it hit the branch's back wall, which it also damaged.

Nobody was in the bank when emergency services arrived.

While the sliding doors were totally smashed, the glass panels on each side escaped damage.

Debris was strewn all around the interior.

A man who was driving on St Georges Terrace told the ABC he saw the vehicle coming up the Terrace from the east, before mounting the verge and lining up in front of the bank.

"It was a deliberate act," he said.

Later, he saw the smashed glass.

The witness, who did not want to be identified, said he thought the driver of the utility was a man.

Forensic officers spent hours going over the vehicle as it remained inside, surrounded by smashed furniture and shattered glass.

The utility wasn't removed from the bank and towed away until late into the night.
