Glass bottles thrown at police responding to an illegal rave attended by '400 people'

Glass bottles were thrown at police officers responding to an illegal rave in Bristol, which was reportedly attended by around 400 people.

Avon and Somerset Police said it became aware of a rave taking place in an unused building off Feeder Road on Saturday night at around 11pm.

Police said that, due to the large number of people in attendance, it was unsafe to close down the event and, instead, entry was blocked off to the building to prevent more people from joining.

The statement added: “Missiles, including glass bottles, were subsequently thrown at officers and an 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, possession of a knife and possession of a Class A drug.

"He has since been released under investigation.

“Officers remained at the scene until the rave ended yesterday evening."

It added: “We understand the disruption caused by the event and would like to thank those affected for their patience during what was clearly a frustrating time.

“Neighbourhood officers continue to work with land owners to secure vacant premises and prevent raves from taking place.”

It is believed a group of the illegal ravers, around 15 people, remain in the unit in Merchants Trade Park, just off Feeder Road in St Philip's, Bristol.

At the rave's height, on the early hours of Sunday, March 1, it is understood there were 400 people in attendance.

"On Sunday, it was very noisy and they were intimidating people," said a nearby worker.

It is understood the unit - which spreads across two floor s- had been empty for more than a year.

Several people told Bristol Live that the unit had just finished being renovated on Friday, with thousands of pounds being spent on the works, as a new tenant was due to move in later this month.

A worker claimed it was the same group of people who held raves in Brislington and in a disused warehouse on Chapel Street in St Philips Marsh over the Christmas and New Year's period.

This morning (Monday), a white Peugeot could be seen in front of the unit's door. A white Peugeot was also parked in front of the disused unit on Chapel Street in New Year.

Rubbish including glass bottles and spray cans is littered the outside of the unit. Empty plastic bags often used to contain drugs could also be seen.

"It is disgusting, especially after the company who owns the building had spent thousands of pounds trying to get back to normal," said another worker. "It is a mess.

"We wonder how long they are going to stay here for as it puts people off.

"This is a very nice estate.

"If the mess was cleaned up, it wouldn't look so bad."

Bristol Live has made attempts to contact the building's owner and its agent.

Merchants Trade Park is described as "a prime modern trading estate", according to IPIF.

In its website, it says: "The warehouse units with ground floor WC’s and undercroft capable of conversion to trade counter area.

"There is first floor office accommodation, a dedicated loading apron and good car parking provision."
