Glasnevin's John Moran brings home gold for Ireland at World Transplant Games

Glasnevin man John Moran sped home to a gold medal in the 60-69 10km time-trial cycling at the World Transplant Games in Newcastle.

As harsh winds wracked the course around the northern English city, Moran put in an exemplary performance to lead home Britain's Gerald Brown by just under 19 seconds.

And the North Dublin man joked after the race that all the thanks can go to his brother, who luckily donated the speedier of his two kidneys to him three decades ago.

"I am delighted and thrilled, the pressure is off now!" he exclaimed after the race.

"A big thank you to all of those who have supported me, my wife Angela who has traveled here with me and of course a special thanks to my brother Frank who gave me his 'fast' kidney thirty four years ago."

Moran is joined on the cycling podium by Galway native Sinead McGowan, Sheila Gregan from Tipperary, and Anna Pojoska who lives in Kerry, who placed second in the 5km team time-trial, while Gregan collected a bronze for herself in the 5km road race, while John McAleer and Charlie Ryan both brought home medals in petanque.

With the games continuing today, Dalkey's Deirdre Faul is guaranteed a medal in the squash final as she goes for a seventh gold medal in a row.
