Glasgow women's rights protests planned in 'solidarity' after Roe v Wade overturn

A women's rights protest will be taking place in Glasgow following the overturning of Roe v Wade in America.

Taking place in George Square, the demonstration spawned from a Glasgow Girls page on Facebook with a number of participants keen to show their solidarity with women affected by the decision.

The group also wants to show that any changes to abortion rights in Scotland 'will not be taken lying down'.

One of the organisers, Stacey McGarry, told Glasgow Live: "Our motivation behind planning the protest began as wanting to stand up and show solidarity for the people of America that the overturn will affect.

"After a group chat was made to organise this we collectively found out that similar discussions are taking place in the UK parliament in regards to the protection of the right to abortion, gay marriage, and also the abortion pills by post will be scrapped as of August 29 this year so our intention is still to show solidarity with America but also show that we aren’t prepared to take the same thing happening here lying down.

"We fear that other countries may take the same steps after the overturning of Roe v Wade. It feels like as a society we’re happy to place all responsibility for pregnancy solely on women when this really shouldn’t be the case, as we all know it takes two to create life and if women can be held responsible then this should be the same across both genders.

"We want to spread the message that we reserve the right to choose what happens with our own bodies.

"If anyone feels like they have ever had that choice taken away from them in any way, please hold on to that feeling and come along to share it with us collectively and use that feeling to try and empathise with what the women of America are currently experiencing."

As well as women sharing their own experiences, there will be guest speakers and live music at the event.

The protest will be taking place in George Square on July 23 at 12pm with another peaceful protest planned for July 16 at 1pm at the same location.
