Glasgow women invited to share experiences of feeling unsafe in city on new app

Women have been invited to share their experiences walking through the streets of Glasgow as part of a new safety campaign.

An interactive map from Women's Safety Scotland pinpoints dozens of public locations as participants share why they feel vulnerable there and the incidents of harassment and abuse some have faced.

Many of the testimonies are included in responses to a survey carried out by community group Wise Women to mark International Human Rights Day on December 10.

One woman said a man kicked at her car and tried to pull her out when she drove into a parking space in Partick.

Recalling the incident on Beith Street, she said: “I worry these men will take out their anger on the next female they come across who is on her own.”

Another told how a man exposed himself as she approached her car following a shift at Yorkhill Hospital.

Signposting Queen’s Park in south side, one participant said: “There are common reports of men exposing themselves to women even in daylight."

One woman shared an experience walking from the city centre to Shawlands: "One summer evening in broad daylight, I had earphones in, a cyclist mounted the pavement and slapped my buttock as he cycled past."

Sauchiehall Street attracted another comment: “You are pretty much guaranteed that if you walk from top to bottom, you’ll receive some sort of harassment.”

Responders also called for improved street and park lighting, CCTV and extra police patrols across the city.

The results of the survey will be published on International Women's Day on Tuesday March 8.
