Glasgow wheelchair tennis ace Gordon Reid wins fourth successive US Open doubles title

Glasgow has itself another sporting success to be proud of after wheelchair tennis ace Gordon Reid secured his fourth successive US Open doubles title at Flushing Meadows in New York.

The 28-year-old, alongside doubles partner Alfie Hewett, lifted the trophy after defeating Frenchmen Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer 6-4 6-1 to win their eighth Slam.

Speaking to the media after the win, Reid said: "It's an amazing feeling. These are unusual times. It's been six months since we last had the opportunity to compete.

"A massive thanks to Alfie. It's now a few in the bag and I hope it's not the last."

Having grown up in Helensburgh, Reid was introduced to wheelchair tennis at Scotstoun Leisure Centre back in 2005, after developing a rare neurological condition, transverse myelitis, in 2004.

A two-time world singles champion, Reid became the first British men’s wheelchair player to earn a world No. 1 senior ranking after becoming world no.1 in men’s doubles in 2015 - in the same year was named Tennis Scotland International Player of the Year alongside Andy Murray.

And at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, Alexandria-born Reid won Gold in the Men's singles competition and silver in the Men's doubles alongside Alfie Hewett.

His talents also extend to wheelchair basketball, having previously represented Scotland as part of the under-25 team.
