Glasgow wedding venue causing 'misery' for neighbours over noise and litter complaints

Residents in Glasgow's west end say they are barely able to sleep at night due to noise and anti-social behaviour coming from a local wedding and events venue.

Cottiers, on Hyndland Street, has been accused of allowing customers to drink in their beer garden past curfew - creating antisocial levels of noise by those living in overlooking homes.

The former church, which houses a popular bar and restaurant, plays host to live music and weddings. Locals say they are currently hearing 'numerous' weddings every week as well as other functioned events leaving them unable to get any sleep before 'at least 11.30pm'.

One resident told Glasgow Live: "We've been here for around five years and the issues are never-ending. It's impossible to get to sleep at a decent time and even then you're getting woken up throughout the night.

"There are constant weddings so there are people in the beer garden smoking or standing out front smoking and chatting in groups. We've had a string quartet basically playing at the bottom of one of the gardens.

"As well as that are often three different types of music on from all the different event spaces in the building - it's like Bonkers on Sauchiehall Street.

"The noise goes on even after the curfew because the staff is allowing it to happen right up to 1am.

"It's getting to the stage where the noise pollution is incredible and I believe they're breaching licensing agreements."

As well as the noise from customers, residents are being disturbed by glass bottles being dumped and uplifted, bins being slammed, and seagulls feasting at rubbish being left on the street.

The residents are now concerned that the mess could lead to a rat infestation.

They added: "Five or six bins are being emptied and slammed in the shared lane at 1.30am then they get collected at 4am and 6am so it starts all over again. They're often left overflowing or not closed properly so the seagulls are getting in and screeching first thing in the morning waking us up.

"We're worried it's going to lead to a big rat problem having rubbish strewn all over the place.

"I've spoken to the guys who oversee the venue and have had discussions with them about what's going on but once they're done for the day, the staff are just doing whatever they want. It's complete negligence.

"Staff have begun filming us when we go over to ask them to turn the music down, it's quite intimidating. I think people would be shocked to learn how we're being treated - it's as if the townhouses have just been forgotten about."

Cottiers have been approached by Glasgow Live for comment.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said no complaints have been received in relation to the venue but that "residents are entitled to complain to the licensing team if they are unhappy with the way a licensed premises is being operated".

They added: "Police also have a key role in enforcing the licensing legislation and people can contact police directly if there is a matter of concern at a premises."
