Glasgow weather: When UK heatwave will stop as Met Office issue amber warning

It's another day and another heatwave.

Today (July 19) Glasgow is set to see highs of 29C with the Met Office issuing an amber weather warning.

And whilst many of us may have had an uncomfortable night as we tried to get some much needed sleep, it proved quite tricky with our homes trapping in the heat - so we can't blame you if you didn't have the best rest.

As it gets hotter, experts have been warning people to look after themselves. However they have also warned pet owners to keep their furry four legged friends safe and out of the heat.

But with people finding it a little too hot, because as we all know a heatwave in Glasgow is very different to a heatwave abroad, when can we expect temperatures to cool down?

Here's what you need to know...

According to the Met Office, Glasgow is set to see highs of 20C across the rest of the week. This will then stop and on Monday (July 25), the temperature will drop ever so slightly to 19C.

It will still be hot however we won't have the weather we are experiencing now - at least at the time of writing this. The current weather forecast says that the city will have rain to cool everyone down with rain expected between 5pm and 6pm today.

Experts at the Met Office have issued a red and amber warning for much of the country today with Glasgow in the amber section. The warning, which will remain in place until 11.59pm today, reads: "After a very warm night, hot weather, already underway across other parts of England and Wales is expected to develop more widely across Wales, southwest and northern England, plus parts of southern and south-eastern Scotland. Some exceptionally high temperatures are possible, both by day and by night, for Monday and Tuesday. This following a warm weekend, will likely bring widespread impacts to people and infrastructure."

Met Office Amber weather warning - what to expect

  • Adverse health effects are likely to be experienced by those vulnerable to extreme heat. Government advice is that 999 services should be used in emergencies only; seek advice from 111 if you need non-emergency health advice.
  • The wider population are likely to experience some adverse health effects including sunburn or heat exhaustion (dehydration, nausea, fatigue) and other heat related illnesses
  • Some changes in working practices and daily routines likely to be required
  • An increased chance that some heat-sensitive systems and equipment may fail, potentially leading to localised power cuts and the loss of other services to some homes and businesses
  • More people are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers leading to an increased risk of water safety incidents
  • Some delays to road, rail and air travel are possible, with potential for welfare issues for those who experience prolonged delays
