Glasgow weather: Warning issued as Met Office predicts heavy rain and possible thunderstorms

A Yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for heavy rains in Glasgow tomorrow.

The warning is in place from 1pm until 9pm, with heavy showers expected in the city and surrounding areas on Tuesday afternoon, bringing with them the possibility of some disruption.

The Met Office warning reads: "Heavy showers are expected to develop on Tuesday afternoon. Whilst most places will miss the worst, some showers could be slow moving and there is a chance of that 20-25 mm of rain might fall in an hour with perhaps 50 mm in 3 hours.

"The showers will ease during Tuesday evening."

Here's what the Met Office say we should expect:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings along with fast flowing or deep floodwater
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

A wider Met Office forecast for Strathclyde tomorrow reads: "Mist and low cloud dispersing during morning with sunny spells developing. Showers breaking out later in morning, becoming heavy and possibly thundery in the afternoon and early evening. Maximum temperature 21 °C."

And for the rest of the week, the forecast for Strathclyde reads: "Sunny spells and a few sharp showers on Wednesday. Rain Wednesday night soon clearing on Thursday morning then drier, brighter and warmer. Wet, windy weather arriving on Friday."
