Glasgow weather update as 'polar plunge' set to hit Scotland with freezing temperatures

Scotland is set to be hit a four-day 'polar plunge' starting on Thursday, with cold temperatures and even snowfall predicted in some parts of the country.

Fortunately, it looks like Glasgow is set to avoid the worst of the Arctic flurry, with temperatures holding steady above 10 degrees Celsius for most the rest of the week - with Thursday being an exception.

Skies in the city are set to be clear for much of Wednesday morning, before turning cloudy at around 3pm.

The Met Office describes the day as "generally" mostly dry and bright with "only a few isolated light showers".

Moving further into the evening, some light rain is expected at around 8pm and 9pm before disappearing for the remainder of the night.

However, around this time, temperatures begin to plummet as the city braces for the polar blast on Thursday.

Here's the weather outlook for the rest of the week in Glasgow.

Thursday

Thursday will be the day Glasgow is worst hit by the chilly northerly air, with temperatures dipping as low as 5 degrees Celsius in the early morning.

After 9am, things will gradually heat up, eventually reaching 9C at 1pm, but this is as warm as the city is expected to get throughout the day.

Fortunately, it's likely to be a bright and dry one, with the chance of precipitation resting below 10% until 11pm - when it rises to 40%.

Friday

The mercury is set to rise slightly on Friday, with temperatures increasing from 9C in the early and late morning to 11C later on in the afternoon.

However, the sun is likely to make only a brief appearance in the morning at around 10am, before skies turn grey for the rest of the day.

Again, it looks to be a dry one in Glasgow, with the chance of precipitation holding steady at 10% for the full day.

Saturday

Glasgow will continue to warm up on Saturday, with highs of 14C predicted by the Met Office.

Unfortunately, the rain is likely to make a return later in the afternoon - with a 60% chance of precipitation at 4pm, rising to 90% at 7pm, where it will remain until the early hours of Sunday morning.

Sunday

Things will remain relatively mild in the city, with temperatures holding steading around 12C to 13C for most of the day.

However, it will likely be the wettest day of the week, with light and heavy showers coming and going all the way through to 10pm.
