Glasgow weather this weekend: Hail and thunder forecast as city faces freezing temperature drop

When all you can do is ‘go for a nice walk’ on the weekend, it’s hard not to resent the grey Glasgow weather at times.

Unfortunately, we have some bad news for the weekend ahead, folks, because the Met Office is throwing around words unlikely to please any of us, from ‘wintry showers’ to ‘hail and thunder’.

Great.

If you’ve looked out the window today - or even ventured outside - then you’ll have seen a rainy start, although skies have turned blue this lunchtime.

However, the forecast warns of more showers turning ‘wintry’ on higher ground (which could mean sleet falling) - while down at city level, we’re looking at “showers often heavy with some hail and thunder likely, turning wintry to increasingly low levels through the day.”

The maximum temperature is 8 degrees but we’re unlikely to feel anything above 5 or 6C - so if you’re thinking of cranking the heating back up indoors, now might be the time.

Wintry showers look set to continue into the night with a chilly -1C minimum temperature - and by tomorrow (Saturday) Glasgow could be battered by gale force winds, as well as more rain.

Sunday promises a drier, cloudy day but more rain will move in on Sunday night and persist into Monday and Tuesday, although temperatures may creep back up to highs of 14C by then.

It’s not the best news we’ve heard considering that spring officially starts this weekend, with the clocks going forward on Saturday and the arrival of British Summer Time.

Still, here’s to sunnier days - and dare we say it, beer gardens? - ahead in the not-so-distant future.

However you spend your weekend, have a good one, Glasgow.
