Glasgow weather: Storm Francis set to hit today as city put on flood alert

Glasgow is braced for heavy rain and strong winds with Storm Francis set to batter the UK this Tuesday.

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for rain while the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) have advised West Central Scotland is on flood alert.

The weather warning came into force at midnight this morning and remains in place until 6am tomorrow.

Ahead of Storm Francis making landfall, the Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page, warned: “The UK is in for another unseasonably wet and windy spell with Storm Francis arriving on Tuesday. There will be strong winds and heavy rain, especially in the west of the UK. A number of severe weather warnings have been issued and these warnings can be updated regularly so please keep up to date with the latest Met Office forecast.”

Meanwhile, with the yellow weather warning in place, the Met Office advise of potential travel disruption in and around Glasgow: "Heavy rain is expected during Tuesday and early Wednesday and is expected to result in some flooding and disruption to travel."

What to expect

  • Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life
  • Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings

Furthermore, SEPA say: "Heavy and persistent rain during Tuesday could cause flooding impacts from surface water and small watercourses, during Tuesday and overnight into Wednesday.

"Particularly at risk are flood prone urban areas and the transport network. Impacts may include flooding to low-lying land and roads, with difficult driving conditions.

"Individual properties may also be at risk."
