Glasgow weather: New thunderstorm warning in place as city battered by flooding over weekend

Glasgow has been battered by torrential rain over the weekend, with many homes, businesses and roads flooding in the downpour.

Unfortunately, the wet weather is set to continue over the course of this week - with the Scottish Environment and Protection Agency's (SEPA) flood alert remaining in place today.

Meanwhile, a Met Office yellow weather warning for thunderstorms will come into effect later today for parts of east Glasgow and all of Lanarkshire.

Saturday and Sunday's downpour caused major disruption across the city, with Haggs Road in the south side closed by Glasgow City Council from around 6.30pm until 7am today.

Meanwhile, businesses have been hit hard by the closure. Popular Finnieston restaurant The Gannet was forced to close after it was hit by flash flooding.

Mount Florida Gift shop Sunshine No.1 has also closed until further notice, releasing a statement on Facebook that read: "Rainwater has been pouring down the walls and from the ceiling, so it is with a heavy heart and a lot of tears I have to announce that the shop is closed until it's all fixed.

"After the last 18 months it's utterly heartbreaking for this to happen.

"The online shop is still open so if you need anything at all I can deliver/arrange to meet/post out.

"Please keep everything crossed for me that the factor and insurance people can get this sorted as soon as possible and we'll be back open before you know it."

The Met Office thunderstorm warning will come into effect at noon today, lasting until 9pm tonight.

The alert reads: "Heavy, slow-moving, thundery downpours will develop on Monday. Some places will miss these, but where they do occur, 20-30 mm rain may fall in a short space of time, perhaps with 50-80 mm over several hours in a few places. The showers will die out during the evening."

However, the good news is we're set to get at least a temporary break from the relentless rain, giving flood levels an opportunity to ease.

This is the current forecast for the coming days:

Monday

Plenty of dry and bright weather with some warm sunshine breaking through. Showers will break out this afternoon, heavy at times, especially over parts of Lanarkshire. Drier along the Clyde Coast and across Argyll. Maximum temperature 22 °C.

Tuesday

A mainly dry and bright day with some warm sunshine. There will be a few showers over Lanarkshire in the afternoon. Maximum temperature 22 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday

Band of rain will cross parts during Wednesday then a dry, bright start to Thursday. Rather cloudy, showery, windy conditions will move in from Atlantic later Thursday and on Friday.
