Glasgow weather: Met Office forecast for May and when the dreich weather will end

The Met Office has released a long range weather forecast for the remainder of May, and it's not looking ideal for Glasgow.

As lockdown restrictions eased across the country, we think every Glaswegian bar none has been hoping for some much needed sunshine to enjoy a wee visit to the park or to our local pub beer garden for a wee sherry or two with our pals.

However, the last week or two has brought with it a deluge of heavy rain that has kept the majority of us thinking twice about crossing the door - and others huddled under parasols while braving the weather outside a pub at Glasgow Cross.

Currently, the Met Office are stating that Saturday will start off nice before strengthening winds and periods of rain soon arrive by afternoon. Thereafter showers or longer periods of rain will continue, some of which will be heavy at times.

Moving into next week and Monday (May 10) will see a slight improvement in the weather, with highs of around 13C and a bit of sunshine mixed with cloudy conditions and light showers, with Tuesday to have similar conditions.

Despite the heavy rain being set to ease soon, forecasters have not given the best outlook for the rest of May.

Describing the period between May 11 to May 20, the Met Office long range forecast for the UK states:

"A mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers are likely on Tuesday, with some of the showers being locally heavy and possibly thundery.

"The most frequent downpours will be in the north and west, and a more organised band of rain may approach from the southwest later in the day. Southern parts of the country could well receive rain on Wednesday and Thursday, while conditions further north could be clearer but showery.

"The unsettled theme continues through the remainder of this period, with longer spells of rain and showers in between. It's likely to be breezy at times; especially around coastal areas, where gales may occur. Temperatures will be near to or slightly below average, though overnight frosts becoming unlikely."

While in reference to the remainder of May, forecasters stated that they are not expecting any heatwaves anytime soon, adding:

"Confidence is low for this outlook, with weakening signals from global weather drivers. A mixture of sunny spells and showers is likely, especially at first, with areas in the south experiencing the most settled and dry conditions through this period.

"Towards the north and northwest there is an increased chance of unsettled weather as longer spells of rain and strong winds arrive from the Atlantic at times. Temperatures likely to be around average."
