Glasgow weather: Lightning strikes city as Met Office warns of further thunderstorms

Glasgow has been struck by lightning this afternoon with more thunderstorms on the way.

A Met Office weather warning for thunder and lightning is in force for much of Scotland, with the country under the amber alert until 23.59pm tomorrow evening (Saturday).

Thunder was first heard in the Glasgow area in the likes of East Kilbride and Renfrewshire with the Lightning tracker app confirming lightning had struck in the east end - specifically on Langbar Crescent in Wellhouse - at around 2.20pm.

As we reported on Friday, we could be set for up to eight hours of thunderstorms here in the city today, alongside some strange spells of sunshine in between the thunder and lightning.

Temperatures are also set to hover around the 21C mark, ensuring some seriously humid and clammy weather.

The Met Office warning reads "Heavy showers are expected to break out across much of the UK again on Saturday. The heaviest showers are expected within the warning area where some of the showers will be slow-moving and thundery. Not all locations will be affected by the heaviest showers, with some areas escaping much in the way of rainfall.

"However, where the showers do occur there is potential for a further 20-30 mm of rain in a relatively short time period and during the course of the day there is a chance that some places could see as much as 50-70 mm building up."

Meanwhile, the weather forecast for the Strathclyde region reads: "Some bright or sunny intervals and scattered showers, occasionally heavy and thundery. Feeling warm and humid. Maximum temperature 21 °C."
