Glasgow weather latest as snow and ice Met Office warning remains in force

Glasgow is currently under a weather warning for snow and ice following freezing overnight temperatures in the city.

The Met Office issued the updated warning last night, with Glasgow previously not being included, which covers the majority of Scotland.

Temperatures plummeted to around -1c in Glasgow overnight while many people will have woken up to a light dusting of snow today.

The yellow warning came into force at 5pm last night and will remain in place until 11am this morning (Sunday).

The cold weather follows Storm Arwen having battered most of the UK, however Glasgow and the west coast survived relatively unscathed.

Transport services throughout the country were thrown into chaos and more than 100,000 homes were left without power, with parts of Scotland experiencing wind gusts of between 80 and 90mph.

The main areas affected included Angus, Perthshire and the Moray coast and Aberdeenshire, where a man sadly died after his pick-up truck was hit by a falling tree.

Amid the latest weather warning for Scotland, which includes Glasgow, the Met Office say:

"Wintry showers causing icy stretches. Snow showers becoming more extensive over parts of Scotland and northwest England early Sunday."

What to expect

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some roads and railways may be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
