Glasgow weather: Hogmanay snow and ice warning as forecasters predict travel delays

A weather warning for snow and ice remains in place for Glasgow this morning and will continue into this afternoon.

The Met Office issued the yellow alert from 6pm yesterday, and it will remain in place until 2pm this afternoon.

Warnings are in place across large parts of the UK, with the Met Office warning of "ice likely to form across parts of Scotland, north Wales and north England leading to some travel disruption along with snow for some parts."

It comes after Glasgow has been hit with frosty weather for a number of days, with large sections of the city waking up to snow.

A statement from the Met Office reads: "Showers of rain, sleet and snow will move south across parts of Scotland, north Wales and north England through Wednesday evening and into Thursday. Whilst not all areas will see these where they do fall ice is expected to form.

"The showers are also likely to fall as snow at times, mainly above 200 m but to some lower levels, particularly on Thursday morning over southern Scotland. Some accumulations of 1-3 cm are likely, again mainly over higher ground, but 5 cm or more is possible over parts of southern Scotland."

Residents have been warned to prepare for the following:

  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
