Glasgow weather: city set for wet and windy weekend as Storm Alex approaches UK

The tail-end of a storm approaching the south coast of the UK will be felt up here in Glasgow this weekend, according to the Met Office forecast.

Storm Alex, a weather system named by Metro-France, could bring gales of up to 65mph to the south of England - and while we’ll miss the worst of it on Friday, it’s bad news for your weekend here on the west coast of Scotland.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, Nick Silkstone, said: “Saturday will be a very wet day as heavy bands of rain push north and west across the country, followed by showery rain on Sunday.  It’ll be cold and windy too with a risk of coastal gales in some areas.

“The Met Office has issued a rain warning covering large parts of the country over the weekend and we’re urging people to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and warnings during this spell of disruptive weather.”

That weather warning doesn’t affect Glasgow yet, but a look at Saturday’s forecast says it could be on the way.

The prediction is heavy rainfall throughout the day, sitting at 80-90% chance of downpours by 10am on Saturday morning.

There’s no break from it throughout, with heavy rain forecast right into the early hours of Sunday, potentially easing off late morning - although further showers are on the cards on Sunday afternoon.

The Met Office warns of “localised flooding possible” and strong northeast winds.

In short, it looks like a weekend for a duvet day, if ever there was one.
