Glasgow was the hottest place in Scotland yesterday as temperatures soared to 28C

Just when we thought the summer was gone for good, we've been treated to an unexpected return of the sunny weather and toasty temperatures this weekend.

And although today isn't quite a warm as yesterday, we're still enjoying temperatures of around 22C to ease us into Monday.

On Sunday, Glasgow enjoyed the warmest temperatures anywhere in Scotland, with a recorded temperature of 28.4C at Bishopton.

It is only  slightly cooler than the hottest day ever recorded in Glasgow, which was believed to be 31.2C way back on August 4, 1975.

A Met Office report from that year reads: “A number of long-standing temperature records were broken: in Glasgow, a maximum of 31.2C on the 4th was the highest in any month in composite records for the area going back to 1868.”

The late summer sunshine, as a result of warm air being dragged up over the UK from France, comes at the end of what has been a wet and chilly month so far.

The extreme weather prompted vets to issue a warning to dog owners about over-exercising their pets in high temperatures.

Pet emergency firm Vets Now said flat-faced breeds, such as French bulldogs and pugs, were particularly susceptible to overheating.
