Glasgow viral: The reason a 2019 tweet about a city tap is sending Spanish people 'loco'

Glasgow seems to have found itself witness to an online stooshie of sorts with Spanish folk at the moment.

While you might think it could be because of the fact Batman was cutting about on his BatCycle as Hollywood came to town for filming for The Flash movie, the truth is a lot more bizarre.

It concerns a tweet that was published by a Spanish NGO back in June of 2019, which reported on the installation of a top-up water tap on Buchanan Street offering Glaswegians access to fresh, clean drinking water at the push of a button.

The tweet from Associacion Ambite Europeo read: "Wild cheering for this Buchanan Street water filling station, Glasgow - Scotland's busiest shopping street.

"An amazing and simple way to prevent people from buying plastic bottles. We need it all over the world!"

So why has it gone viral and why does it continue to be commented on even now more than two years later?

Well some folk over in the land of chorizo and Rioja seem to have taken umbrage at the tweet calling for the world to follow suit, pointing to the fact that such a thing already exists over there and has done for thousands of years - and they are called fountains.

Among the hundreds of - tongue in cheek - responses to the tweet show people sharing pics of Roman drinking fountains and quips such as: "It's only taken them 2,000 years to arrive in Scotland after the Roman Empire"."

While others have replied to the pic with: "How quickly science advances" and: "Millennials discovering public fountains".

One thing's for certain though, we guarantee that none of the water out a fountain over in Spain tastes a delicious as the one that comes out that tap on Buchanan Street!
