Fashion-conscious fans of the wardrobes of style icons Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are in for a double-treat with the launch of a new course by University of Glasgow that will look into the history of royal fashion.
The course, entitled 'A History of Royal Fashion', will allow students to learn how royalty used fashion to entertain, control and impress over the past 500 years from the Tudors, Stuarts and Georgians to the Windsors.
The free, five-week online course has been developed in collaboration with the Historic Royal Palaces, and will give students exclusive access to the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection - which contains more than 10,000 pieces of clothing, from the garments of Queen Victoria to Princess Diana's costumes and the attire worn by Queen Elizabeth II.
Students will also be able to go behind the scenes at the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace and the Banqueting House to explore the styles of monarchs and their families and the impact of their clothing on society.
By the end of the course, organisers say students will have achieved an understanding of the history of British monarchs as well as the ability to identify key fashion developments from the 16th century to the present day.
No prior knowledge is required and all learners are welcome on the course, which is designed for those who have an interest in fashion and history - and which will require around four hours of weekly study to complete over the five week period.
