Glasgow train journey named one of the best in the UK

You know you’re in good company when you’re listed alongside some of the greatest spots in the UK - so news that a Glasgow train ride has made a prestigious hotlist has us very excited.

Conde Nast Traveller’s annual pick of the best train journey's in the UK has just been published, and the 2022 list includes one of our own.

The Glasgow to Mallaig journey zooms in at number six, sitting alongside popular train trips like The Belmond Royal Scotsman, Snowdon Mountain Railway and The Dartmoor Line.

The train, which departs from Glasgow Queen Street, caught Conde Nast’s attention thanks to the magnificent scenes that passengers can enjoy while onboard.

The list reads: “Chugging out of Glasgow Queen Street, this train tails the River Clyde for some time before tearing away towards raw Scottish wilderness. Surrounded by glens tinged with the mauve of wild heather, it climbs up and around the bonny banks of Loch Lomond, clinging to hillsides trimmed with birch trees.

"Not long after Tyndrum, move to the front of the train and look back as it curls around the horseshoe bend at the foot of Beinn Doran before carrying on to Fort William. It’s a jolly summer jaunt – but brave the bite of wind and sleet and a winter journey brings beauty in the form of frozen rivers and daggers of ice dangling from trees.

"Towards the end of the line, the train runs along the 21 arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct at the top of Loch Shiel – a sight commonly known to Harry Potter fans as the route of the Hogwarts Express."

Whether you a Potterhead or not, we’d say the Glasgow to Mallaig journey is well worth a trip…
