Glasgow took in more asylum seekers than anywhere else in UK in 18 month period reveals new study

A report by the University of Oxford has revealed that Glasgow took in more asylum seekers than anywhere else in the UK from 2018 to the middle of 2019.

The Migration Observatory report noted that in the year to June 2019, the city took in more than 4,000 asylum seekers on section 95 support (whose claims are ongoing - while more than 150 regions in the UK did not house any whatsoever.

The report also revealed most people seeking asylum in 2018 were from Iran, Iraq, Eritrea, Pakistan and Albania, with most living in the north east of the UK.

And while Glasgow had the most asylum seekers as of the end of June this year, the south east and east of England housed the fewest, the report found.

Migration Observatory researcher and report author Dr Peter Walsh said: "Many of these authorities will have supported resettled refugees, but nevertheless, the distribution of asylum seekers around the UK is pretty unequal".

The report, published today (Friday, November 8), found that 75% of asylum seekers in the UK waited more than six months for an initial decision on their case in the last quarter of 2018 - a higher amount than in previous years.

While the report also found that 55% of asylum applications from 2012 to 2016 had been accepted by May 2019 - taking into account appeal decisions.
